Benito Skinner and Mary Beth Barone appeared at Teen Vogue Fest 2026 in Brooklyn to discuss their friendship and creative partnership. The collaboration now includes a Prime Video series and a standup special.
The comedians spoke with Teen Vogue Digital Director Alyssa Hardy about their working relationship. What began as a standup set and an Instagram video evolved into a long-term project that blends comedy and television.
From Standup to Screen
Skinner gained early recognition on Instagram before developing Overcompensating, a series based on his college years. Barone, a standup comedian and actor, joined as both a writer and cast member.
“We recognized that we were really different but very complementary of each other,” Barone said. “It felt natural to keep working together and inspire one another.”

Skinner, who also produces Barone’s upcoming standup special Galaxy Brain, described their on-set dynamic as familial. He had always admired how comedians like those on SNL and in Adam Sandler films worked with close friends. “When I met Mary Beth, it was obvious we’d collaborate for years,” he said.
A Show Built on Conviction
The series Overcompensating started as a live performance in 2019 before Skinner sold it to a network the following year. After three years in development, it premiered on Prime Video last year. Skinner called the process a struggle but one he was committed to winning.
“I was so passionate about it, I knew the world and everything I wanted for it,” he said. “For anyone entering TV or film, you have to push hard to get projects made. I made sure every detail was outlined to make it impossible to ignore.”
Every creative choice—casting, music, directors—was one he fully supported. The second season continues immediately after the first, with Barone’s character, Grace, playing a larger role. Barone noted that older sisters have told her the show reflects their experiences.

The new season will also feature a cameo from Ashlee Simpson.
The duo shared advice for aspiring creators, stressing the value of setting limits. Barone referenced Mary-Kate and Ashley: “‘No is a complete sentence.’ It’s powerful to say no without explanation.”
Skinner agreed, encouraging creators to disconnect from their devices. “The internet fixates on trends, but caring about people is what truly matters.”
